Supervisor Synopsis:
I hope 2010 finds everyone in the Township in good
health . We Esca naba Township residents had a
very fruitful year in 2009. A few of the more
important things that happened are: 1. A ten year
project to have a rodent infested home in the Lake
Bluff area removed finally happened. 2. County
Road 416 (20th road) in the Flat Rock area was
completely reconstructed with new concrete
culverts and asphalt paving four feet wider than it
previously was. The Township paid $100 ,000 of the
total $950 ,000 project. 3. The Township received a
$25 ,000 grant from 2% distribution funds from the
Hannahville Indian Community to be used toward
the purchase of a new water tender truck for our
Fire Department in 2010.4. The enforcement of the
Township blight ordinance resulted in a property in
the Chaison Road area being cleaned up very
nicely .
Township Ordinances:
Escanaba Townsh ip has many ordinances that
were developed through public hearings of the
Planning Commission over the past several
decades. The most important of these is the zoning
ordinance but the one getting the most attention in
recent years is the blight ordinance. It is costly to
enforce some of these ordinances but the
Township is devoted to trying to keep the
community relat ively neat to benefit the general
health and welfare of the majority of the citizens .
The more funds spent on this endeavor, uses funds
that could be put to better use such as roads or fire
protection. Many people have some items that
could be considered blight by a neighbo r so we ask
that you try to keep your yard looking neat from the
road or your neighbors view. A few examples
include unused or seasonablly used vehicles such
as plow trucks , wood piles in the front yard and
older or unused buildings or sheds.
Clerks Corner:
New Residents may register to vote by calling
Patricia Beachamp at 789-9050. Precinct 1 votes
at the Cameron School , which covers all voters
east of the Escanaba River. Precinct 2 votes at the
Township Hall and covers all voters west of County
Road 426 . Precinct 3 also votes at the Hall and
covers all voters located between the River and
County Road 426. There will be many items on the
ballot this year including one to change the State
Constitution , which could eliminate Township
Government as we know it.
Treasurer Tidbits:
Treasurer Linda Trombley-Robitaille collects
property taxes on Wednesday from 9 :00 A.M. to
4:00 P.M. during the tax cycle at the Township Hall
on 20th Road in Flat Rock. Checks may be sent to
her for payment at 8579 County 416 J Road,
Cornell, MI 49818 (please include the parcel
number with payment). Summer tax deferrals are
available to defer the summer tax bill until February
15th without penalty based on qualificat ions of the
15th without penalty based on qualifications of the
General Property Tax Act. Questions arise
periodically as to where all persons property tax
dollars go. Below is a pie chart which shows rough
percentages of a -- typical homestead property tax
bill for the whole year.
